THE LIGHT
"There aren't words to describe what happens when we all get together and start playing. The sum is much greater than the individual parts. It's incredible, really. It's almost mysterious, spiritual. When we're really cookin', it's like we're levitating. So, one day I just thought, why not 'The Light'? I like the idea of people asking one another, 'hey, have you seen the light?'
These guys are like my brothers.
Scott Frenchek (bass/vocals) has been playing with me for over 20 years now. He's a hell of a musician. I certainly feel a lot of 'Motown' in his groove. Our vocal harmonies have come from a lifetime of singing together. When we're really hittin' the note, It's like we're one person.
Brian Trump (drums) is the best backbeat, rock solid foundation, any bandleader could ask for. A band is only as good as its dummer. Trumpy is the whole vibe. His creative energy inspires us, and truly points our direction as a band.
Mike Mink (keyboards) is the other half of my musical heartbeat. There's a constant conversation happening between our instruments. Imagine combining the piano stylings of Bill Evans, Jerry Lee Lewis, Ray Charles, and Bruce Hornsby - that's pretty wild - but, that's what I feel when Professor Mink starts walking his fingers.
I also do gigs as 'Corty & Friends', which switches up our rhythm section... and can add a seemingly endless stream of other associated players. I'll have Bob Esbenshade (bass/vocals) and Travis Warlow (drums) holding it down. Bob and I go way back.... and Travis, too. Their old-school approach locks them in together - like a glove. You might see us with some horns, violin - you never know who might be in town.
I'm truly grateful and blessed to make music with such amazing musicians. I''m always looking forward to the next gig... what a gift."
